Event Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe at least three major historical developments, two foundational theories, and the core philosophical principles underlying sandtray therapy, and explain its rationale as a key component of play therapy through written assessment or class discussion
  • Identify and describe at least three appropriate types of sandtray containers, three categories of miniature figurines, and two types of sand or sand-like materials used in sandtray therapy; Explain the therapeutic purpose of each material within the context of play therapy; and demonstrate appropriate setup and use of materials in a mock sandtray session, as evaluated by a skills checklist with at least 85% accuracy.
  • Identify and explain four key differences between directive and non-directive approaches in sandtray therapy and play therapy practices, as demonstrated through a written comparison chart, group discussion, or case scenario analysis.
  • Identify and describe four key neurobiological effects of trauma (e.g., dysregulation of the nervous system, impaired attachment, sensory processing issues, and memory fragmentation), and explain how each can be addressed through specific sandtray or play therapy interventions, as demonstrated in a written reflection, case study, or role-play exercise.
  • Describe three specific ways to process trauma within the sandtray therapy process using play therapy techniques—such as externalization of traumatic experiences, creation of a coherent trauma narrative, and use of symbolic regulation—and illustrate each through a case example, role-play, or written explanation.
  • Describe three developmentally appropriate interventions for processing sandtray therapy with preschool and school-aged children within a play therapy context—such as story stem completion, role-playing miniatures, and therapist-guided narrative building—and explain how each supports emotional expression, regulation, and integration of traumatic experiences
  • Identify and explain three ways sandtray therapy can be used with adolescent clients in conjunction with play therapy approaches—such as promoting self-identity exploration, processing peer and family dynamics, and supporting emotional regulation—and demonstrate understanding through case discussion, role-play, or written analysis.
  • Identify and describe three ways to process sandtray therapy with adult clients by incorporating play therapy principles—such as using metaphor to explore unresolved trauma, facilitating role reversal for perspective-taking, and integrating narrative storytelling for meaning-making—and demonstrate understanding through a written case reflection, client vignette, or experiential practice.
  • Describe two interventions for utilizing sandtray therapy with couples and families that integrate both sandtray and play therapy modalities—such as creating a shared family world to explore relational dynamics and using co-constructed trays to enhance communication and problem-solving—and illustrate each intervention through a case example, role-play, or written activity plan
  • Explain at least three key differences between sandplay and sandtray therapy—such as theoretical foundations, level of directive involvement, and use of verbal processing—and describe the role each plays within the broader play therapy process through written comparison, discussion, or applied case example.
  • Demonstrate understanding of working with at least three different client populations (e.g., children, adolescents, adults) and three common client issues (e.g., trauma, anxiety, grief) in the sandtray therapy process, and explain how sandtray therapy approaches intersect with play therapy principles, as shown through case studies, role-plays, or written reflections.
  • Analyze and articulate the transformative potential of sandtray and play therapy in self-exploration and healing by identifying at least three therapeutic powers of play (e.g., symbolism, emotional expression, empowerment), supported by examples from case studies, personal reflection, or literature review.
  • Demonstrate practical skills in incorporating sandtray therapy into therapeutic practice by conducting at least one simulated session that includes ethical decision-making and client-centered techniques, and complete a reflection on maintaining these standards throughout the process.
